This vessel was made for a class project in pottery and for world history. I was given the assignment to find an ancient shape of a pot and copy it to the best of my ability. I chose a hes vase dated back to 2500 BC. It was discover in the Egyptian tomb of King Tutankhamun. This vessel was use for purification. The Egyptians believed that the deceased needed to be ritually purified in order to pass in to the afterlife. The shape of the vessel was based on the hieroglyphic hes, which means “the favored one”. The Egyptian god Anubis, the god of protection into the afterlife and mummification, is believed to put a sacred liquid in the vessel for the journey of the dead to pass safely into the afterlife. The vessel was made to magically protect the person who possessed it. The glaze used is called Faience, considering I did not have that glaze, I used a teal.
